T O U R I S T

“Only those who take leisurely what the people of the world are busy about can be busy about what the people of the world take leisurely “.

Lin Yutang

The new technology of cell phone cameras and the omnipresent multimedia input have rendered traveling and documenting the travel into an ambiguous task. The globalization of cityscapes and their predominant representation produce a resemblance between the images that is hard to escape. Thus, the practice of sightseeing framed the definition of the tourist and the definition of photography into a pre-setup, leaving almost no room for an unexpected outcome neither for a sensual value of the pictures themselves. This phenomenon of touristification has emerged gradually through the media’s constrained prejudices and society’s habitual urge of posing next to the iconic scene.

Still, the search for authenticity is accompanying every journey, and the urge to capture it in a picture goes along. Either it takes a professional attitude and well-equipped setup or simply the right moment and an inventive mind to create a memorable and meaningful picture.

The photography exhibition TOURIST features the work of three contemporary architects, who try to capture the authenticity of their particular travel. With different techniques and strategies, the works of Jurgis Gecys, Clara Maria Fickl and Isa Wolke oscillate between the presentation of their visual encounters and the awareness of their status as tourists.

Not necessarily only in a mind of an architect, avoiding being a tourist triggers the self-awareness and embodiment with the actual place at the time. Through the moments of observing, positioning and holding one’s breath while pressing the shutter, photography transforms one’s perception of the built environment and enables to construct a self-determined and multifaceted morphology of the city, which consequently abbreviates the time span of feeling as a tourist. After all, the photograph itself is a physical proof of this process and has the power to revitalize these enhanced moments back to photographer’s or even to another person’s mind.
